About the Project

Thank you for your interest in the Northern Memories Oral History Project. This project is a collaborative effort between the NSU History Department and the Beulah Williams Library to record, preserve, and share memories of Northern. Our goal is to capture the Northern experience through the eyes of those who lived them. Alumni and former faculty, staff, and other members of the NSU community are invited to share their experiences of studying, working, playing, and living at Northern. These interviews will be recorded and the recordings made available online through the Williams Library.

Participation in this project is voluntary. Each interview will last 30-60 minutes and participants will be asked to provide basic biographical data about their time at Northern (name as a student, years attending Northern, clubs and sports participated in). Participants will also sign donation, agreement, and release forms transferring ownership and copyright of the materials to the Williams Library. The university may also alter, publish and use the interview without contacting the interviewee. Participants, however, have the right to restrict portions of their interviews. Please contact Rachel Senese at the Library if you have any questions.

Participants have two options for these interviews. First, members of the NSU community can interview each other. A list of general topics and questions will be provided to start the conversation. These peer-to-peer interviews can be overseen by a NSU representative to handle any technical difficulties or done on your own. We ask that you please contact us before doing so.

Participants may prefer to be interviewed by a trained NSU history staff member. Typical questions include: When did you graduate from Northern? What was your major? Did you live on campus? If so, which dorm? What do you remember about living in the dorms? Were you involved in a sport or club? What are your favorite memories about that experience?

Participants choosing not to be interviewed are invited to donate NSU memorabilia, photographs, video, papers, and articles of clothing to the University Archives. These materials will become part of the NSU collection.
